Surfer SEO alternative: when the problem is facts, not rankings
If you want a Surfer SEO alternative for content scores and keyword guidelines, other tools do that job. If your problem is facts on published pages going out of date, that is the job Veritas is built for.
Key takeaways
- Surfer is still sold under its own name. It has been part of Positive Group since the October 2025 announcement, and now calls itself an AI visibility platform.
- Surfer scores content for ranking and tracks AI mentions. Its own pages don't describe checking whether facts in an article are still true.
- Veritas does that fact job: it re-checks claims on live pages and flags outdated ones. It complements Surfer; it isn't a like-for-like replacement.
Surfer helps teams write and refresh content that ranks, and more recently to track how often AI search tools mention a brand. Nearly every list of alternatives compares it with similar tools, and seven of the ten we read were written by a competitor or an affiliate who ranks themselves first.
This page does something different. It says what Surfer offers today from its own site, checked on 1 November 2026, separates a ranking refresh from a fact refresh, and shows when Veritas is the right pick and when it isn't.

Which Surfer are you replacing?
Surfer is live and shipping updates, but it has changed in two ways since many comparison lists were written.
Positive Group, a French company, announced the acquisition of Surfer on 28 October 2025. Its post describes Surfer as a Polish AI search optimisation platform, founded in 2017, and gives 150,000 or more active users and about 12,000 customers as Positive's figures. Surfer's own page titles now read "Positive Surfer", but the product and domain are still Surfer, and we found no official rename.
Surfer's home page now calls it an AI visibility platform, with content that ranks on Google and gets cited by AI search engines, not only a content editor.
We could not read Surfer's own announcement, which serves its home page, so we rely on Positive's. Nothing we found says what the deal means for Surfer's plans or customers.
What Surfer does, in its own words
From Surfer's home, pricing, editor, audit and tracker pages:
A real-time score based on what Surfer says are 500 or more ranking factors, with an outline builder, topic gaps taken from competitors, automatic optimisation and internal links.
Pulls position, click-through rate, traffic and Content Score from Search Console, suggests the best opportunities and sends weekly emails about position drops and SERP changes.
Tracks mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, with a visibility score, mention rate and average position.
Keyword research, SERP analyzer, topical map and a cannibalisation report appear in its plan table.
Google Docs, Zapier, ChatGPT, Jasper, an API and several CMS connections.
An in-editor assistant. One of its example prompts asks it to back up sentences with a statistic and a source, which is writing help; Surfer doesn't describe it as a check of published claims.
Plans in outline
We don't print prices here, because roundups quote conflicting ones and Surfer's page is the place to read them. The structure, as of 1 November 2026, is:
An entry content plan, mid-level plans, a top plan, a tracking-only plan for AI mentions, and a custom Enterprise plan.
Documents you can create or optimise (from 120 to unlimited on the top plan, subject to fair use), pages tracked, AI prompts tracked and how often they refresh, team seats, and API access, which sits on the top plan only.
The page shows annual prices and says annual plans are charged for the whole year up front, with a discount of up to 17%.
Surfer says agencies, in-house teams and individuals.
Why people look for a Surfer SEO alternative
The lists we read give a handful of recurring reasons:
Document and page caps matter at agency scale.
Teams want to know whether their content is cited by AI search, and compare how tools track it.
Some want a lighter editor, others a full SEO suite.
Client workspaces, seats and reporting.
Most lists written before late 2025 don't mention it at all.
A ranking refresh is not a fact refresh
Surfer's Content Audit measures position, click-through rate, traffic and Content Score against what currently ranks. A refresh in that sense means adding coverage, terms and links so a page matches the results.
A fact refresh asks something else: is what the page says still true? A statistic is replaced by a newer release, an office-holder leaves, a price or rule changes. A page can hold a strong Content Score while one sentence on it is wrong.
We found no statement on Surfer's pages that it checks facts, numbers, dates or claims in the text. That is an absence on the pages we read, not proof that no such feature exists.
How Veritas handles the fact refresh
Veritas is an autonomous fact-maintenance agent for publishers, built for SEO and content teams, editors and large archives. It runs in the cloud on a schedule.
From sitemaps, sitemap indexes, Google News sitemaps and RSS or Atom feeds.
Statistics, dates, who holds a role, quotes, events, comparisons and superlatives. Opinion and prediction are skipped.
Beyond your own site, preferring primary sources, with domains you can list as trusted.
Supported, contradicted, outdated, misleading or unverifiable.
With evidence, citations and a suggested rewrite applied in one click.
Fast-moving claims after 7 days, slowly decaying ones after 45, stable ones after 365. Unchanged claims are never re-checked or paid for twice.
For the traffic side of refreshes, see our guide to content decay tools.
See which facts on your site have gone out of date.
Request early accessIf you need a like-for-like replacement
Veritas isn't one. If you want content scoring and keyword guidelines, shortlist tools by what you actually use:
How is the score built, and does it fit your niche?
What does it measure, and from which data source?
Which AI search tools does it track, and how often?
Do documents, pages and seats fit your volume and agency model?
Is there a public page and a trial?
Tools the lists name most often include Clearscope, Frase, MarketMuse, NeuronWriter, the Semrush SEO Writing Assistant, SE Ranking, Rankability and Content Harmony. Read each on its own site. For one of them, see how Veritas compares with MarketMuse.
Where roundups of Surfer alternatives go wrong
Checking a few lists against Surfer's own pages turned up these problems:
A roundup dated April 2026 lists plan names and prices that Surfer's pricing page no longer shows.
Older lists, some from 2022 to 2024, ignore AI tracking and the acquisition.
One list says Surfer has no native rank tracking. Surfer's pages describe position tracking through Search Console data in Content Audit and an AI tracker, so it is not a classic full rank tracker, but the claim isn't simply false.
Several lists include general SEO suites next to content editors.
Prices for other tools in the lists come from third-party pages and often disagree.
One post, two kinds of refresh: an example
This is an invented example to show the difference, not a real customer or page.
A guide titled "Remote work statistics for 2026" that quotes a survey figure from 2023.
The page lost positions for two keywords and its Content Score trails the pages that now rank. The fix is more coverage, new terms and internal links.
The survey publisher has released a newer edition with a different figure, so the claim is outdated. The fix is to replace the number, cite the new edition and add the year in the sentence.
Doing only the first can leave a wrong number on a page that now ranks better. Doing only the second can leave a page that still doesn't match what searchers want. Most refreshes need both.
A workflow that uses both
The two jobs sit at different points in a page's life:
Use a content tool to choose topics and optimise the draft.
Veritas has a pre-publish check that fact-checks a draft before it goes live.
Use your SEO tools for position, traffic and AI mentions.
Veritas flags claims that went out of date, with evidence and a suggested rewrite.
When a post is flagged on both counts, fix the facts and the coverage in one pass, then update the date.
Questions to ask before you switch or renew
Whatever you shortlist, ask the vendor:
Ask about roadmap, support and renewal terms.
Documents, pages tracked and prompts differ by tier.
If accuracy matters, ask directly.
Honest limitsWhen Veritas isn't the right fit
Surfer and similar tools are built for that; Veritas offers neither.
Use a tracker; Veritas doesn't measure either.
Veritas excludes the publisher's own pages when it looks for evidence.
Veritas reads the HTML a page serves.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Surfer SEO alternative?
It depends on the job. For content scoring and keyword guidelines, lists most often name Clearscope, Frase, MarketMuse, NeuronWriter and Rankability; check each on its own site. For keeping published facts accurate, Veritas is built for that.
Is Surfer SEO still available?
Yes. surferseo.com is live and shipping updates. It has been part of Positive Group since the acquisition announced on 28 October 2025, and now describes itself as an AI visibility platform.
Does Surfer track AI search visibility?
Yes, according to its own AI tracker page. It tracks mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, with a visibility score, mention rate and average position. Which plan includes which models and how many prompts varies by tier.
Does Surfer check facts?
Its pages describe a content score, an audit based on rankings and traffic, AI-mention tracking and an editing assistant. We found no statement that it checks facts or claims in a published article.
What did the Positive Group acquisition change?
Positive Group announced on 28 October 2025 that it was acquiring Surfer, and Surfer's page titles now read "Positive Surfer". We found no official rename and no statement about what it means for plans or customers, so ask the vendor if it matters to your contract.
How much does Surfer cost?
Surfer's pricing page shows tiered plans billed yearly, based on documents, pages tracked, AI prompts and seats, with a custom Enterprise plan. Read the current prices on its page; roundups often quote old ones.
Is there a free Surfer SEO alternative?
Several lists mention tools with free tiers, but their claims vary and we haven't confirmed them. Check each vendor's own page. Veritas doesn't offer a plan on this page.
Can I use Veritas and Surfer together?
Yes. They do different jobs: Surfer helps write and optimise content and track rankings and AI mentions, and Veritas re-checks the facts on pages once they are live.
Keep every page true
Veritas re-checks the facts across your published pages and hands editors a sourced fix when one goes stale.
